Back From Training with Sipa in Abene, Senegal

Touba Kabira

Touba KabiraJust a quick note to say that we the Drumroots team are back from an all too brief stay and bit training time in Senegal. We returned again to the southern region of Cassamance to stay in a beautiful guest house in Abene. Here we fitted in as much time as we could to study with our teacher Sipa (Mohammed Sylla) and his group Wassalon. We’ve stayed here many times now, never fail to have a good time and feel well looked after and always look forward to returning.

Ever dreamt of traveling to West Arica to staying this beautiful region? Here you can either learn djembe music (with our highly recommended teacher, Sipa), or the study traditional drumming of that region, Segrouba or even simply to escape to the jungle to relax in this idyllic Atlantic beach town. You might also be interested to see the infamous Abene festival, if so why not step just outside the main centre of Abene and stay at this guest house?

Anyone interested in anything that Abene has to offer, please feel free to get in touch and we’ll either do our best to help or put you in touch with our friends over there.

  1. Hi! I’m hoping to come to Senegal to do some drum lessons sometime between February 15th and mid-March! Can you give me more information on what you provide?!

    1. Hi Stephanie. We don’t run trips to Senegal I’m afraid. This blog post you read is quite old, from around 2012.
Those trips weren’t part of an organized drumming retreat but rather something we arranged ourselves. We contacted Sipa our drum teacher directly, organized our lessons, and found local accommodation. Unfortunately, I no longer have the contact for the place where we stayed, but I’m still in touch with Sipa through Facebook Messenger. Here’s a link to his profile:

I highly recommend reaching out to him to arrange your tuition. He’s a fantastic teacher, and I’ve always enjoyed my time studying with him and visiting Abene.
For accommodation, Les Belles Etoiles is a good option. You can check it out here:

More recently, I’ve been travelling to Guinea to study and play. If you’re looking for a more organized drumming retreat, where everything is arranged for you, I’d recommend going with Master Drummer Iya Sako. His retreat starts at the beginning of January. Here’s a link for more information:

I hope that helps. Good luck with your trip!
      Best regards,
