Wow, what an unforgettable experience! This year in Guinea was all about immersing ourselves in the vibrant world of djembe and dun-dun training with the incredible Iya Sako and his talented team. For four amazing weeks, we stayed and trained at the home of the legendary grand master, Famoudou Konate. His knowledge and passion for music created an inspiring environment that fueled our growth as musicians.
The main highlight was performing and playing at weddings and other cultural festivals. Being part of these joyous celebrations allowed us to connect deeply with the local community and experience the music’s powerful role in their traditions. We also had the privilege of participating in the recording of Iya Sako’s new album, which beautifully captures our shared experiences.
We were also treated to breathtaking performances by some of Guinea’s best drumming and dance ballet groups in Conakry, showcasing the incredible talent and rich traditions of the region. Our nights at the local nightclub added an energetic touch to our adventure, where we danced and celebrated with newfound friends.
For those looking to embark on a similar journey next year, this is an incredible opportunity to dive into the culture, perform at unforgettable events, and even play on Iya’s next album! A heartfelt thank you to Iya Sako and Famoudou Konate for making this experience extraordinary. Don’t miss your chance to join the fun next year!
