It’s been a long time since we put some new studio recordings out there and these ones have been ‘in the can’ for quite some time, but finally we are pleased to release three brand new Tanante demo tracks for 2014. The three tracks; Mendiani, Djaa and Dununba, were first recorded over two years ago with our techno man and studio wizard Andy Garvey. In the first session, Tananate along with special guest artists Iya Sako, Sidiki Dembele and Baba Galle laid down live tracks, which we then more recently added the vocals to and finally mixed them down, all at Studio Z (Z Arts Centre). After a long break from performing, our troupe Tananate are back! We will be performing along with our old friend and awesome Dundun player, Ibrou Somah. Appearing at Saturday Night Alive @ The Zombie Shack (formally The Attic, under Oxford Road Station) we are being brought in to rock this increasingly popular club night. As this is a Halloween special we’re expecting the crowds to arrive on mass and we’ll be providing hypnotic, haunting and heavy rhythms for you all to lurch, thrash and freak out to. We’re all looking forward to this one and promise it’s gonna be a set to remember. See you there. (BTW, ITS FREE!!!!!!) (more…)
As part of our on-going working relationship with the Nando’s family, we were recently invited to perform at their staff only event; The Nando’s Grill Off. The event was the national final of a competition where by teams of Nando’s staff compete with their colleagues from other restaurant branches to cook the very best grilled chicken. It seems to us that the Nando’s staff really know how to have a good time! As they arrived, they all seemed in the mood for a fun evening, turning up with costume, props and even chants to support their own branch and designated cook who was to represent them on the grill. The prize was to travel to Sydney, Australia to complete in the Nando’s international Grill Off! (more…)
It’s that time of year again! Beat Herder 2013 is upon us and Tanante will be performing as ever on the Stumble Funk stage, this year at 8pm on Saturday. Our friends, the Stumble Funk crew have put together an awesome line up to contribute to this fantastic festival. We’re really pleased to have a Saturday early evening set time and following last years well received show we can only raise the bar- we’re hard at work preparing an extra special stage show for you all, and also have a surprise guest artist…..! A belated, but nevertheless massive thank you from Drumroots and Tanante to all involved in organizing the Mamady Keita Weekend 2013, last month. We had an awesome time at the event, really enjoyed being there and both supporting Iya Sako’s workshops and participating in Mamdy Keita’s. There was an ace vibe at the venue and it was excellent to see lots of old friendly faces that we haven’t seen for a while.
As for the evening’s entertainment; sadly we didn’t get to see much of the other acts, but Tanante with Iya Sako and Sens Sagna hugely enjoyed performing for you all. Thanks to everybody present who cheered, clapped and danced to our music, and a massive thanks to our friends who joined us on stage for the end of our set. (more…)
Tanante were recently invited to perform at the birdcage in Manchester city centre for the Nando’s Christmas party. The famous chicken restaurant chain Nando’s held its staff Christmas party at the Birdcage venue in Manchester city centre. Nando’s employees from all over the North West enjoyed an African safari themed fancy dress party with stilt walkers, African acrobats and of course the West African drumming sounds of our very own band Tanante. Drumroots recently enjoyed leading African drumming workshops for the nursery children of Didsbury Road Primary School. Joining us for this special occasion was Andy Garvey an excellent djembe, dun-dun drummer and balafon (West African xylophone) player, from our very own performance troupe, Tanante.
The enthusiastic groups of three to four year olds joined the workshops dressed in their own home made African clothes and were wearing the fantastic masks that they had made. Each child displayed amazing drumming skills through the fun activities that we lead. They especially enjoyed playing the games ‘we are the elephants’ and ‘rumble in the jungle’. (more…)
It’s taken a good few days to find the time to do a write up of this event, but the happy memories are as clear as yesterday as this weekend was something special. For some time, the Drumroots team have contemplated the idea of putting together a weekend away in a beautiful place, centred around West African drumming education and performance, but have never enough drive to get it together. Our friends at Kontaani, based in Macclesfield have shown us how it’s done! (more…)
